Memorial Service For Jean Campbell Set June 12

Long-time Saline resident and founder of local craft shows was well known for porcelain dolls.

A memorial service for local artisan and long-time Saline resident Jean  Campbell will be held 3 p.m., June 12, at the United Methodist Church, 1200 N. Ann Arbor Street, Saline. Campbell  died  in January at the age of 80.

  Campbell, an Iowa native who spent her early years in Ann Arbor, moved to Dexter at the age of 12. She was a member of Dexter Methodist Church and graduated from Dexter High School in 1949.

    “Mom was very active in school, plays, organizing events, was a cheerleader, and enjoyed family reunions at the park there in Dexter,” said her daughter Laurie Campbell Nunez.

   After marrying Daniel Campbell – the current “Ambassador” of the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce and lifetime member of Lions Club  – in 1949, she lived in Ann Arbor before moving to Saline in 1964, where she and her husband raised five children Andy, Liz, Pete, Laurie Jo and Chris.

  Campbell  was well known for making porcelain dolls, and was also talented at flower arranging, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, making wreaths, bow making, and ceramics.

  A gifted seamstress, she sewed costumes for Saline High School musicals, the Saline Area Players, Melody on Ice, an Ann Arbor dance studio, and Saline Twirlettes. She taught craft classes at the Ben Franklin store in Saline, founded and managed a craft show at Pittsfield Grange, and with Cheryl Hoeft started the annual Saline Craft Show.

  Campbell attended the First Baptist Church of Saline and later the United Methodist Church of Saline, where she served as wedding coordinator, and also enjoyed doing the Christmas decorations.  

She helped her husband with Saline Lions Club ice cream sales at the Celtic Festival and Saline Community Fair and managed the Saline Community Fair kitchen for years.
