Saline Farmers Market — Abundant with Fresh Veggies and Fruit

ED'S BREAD IS OUR FEATURED VENDOR THIS WEEK

Ed's Bread is our featured vendor this week.

Ed’s Bread is a natural ingredients and preservative-free bakery located at 201 W. Michigan Ave. The bakery was founded in 1988 by Edward Rosen, a third-generation Jewish baker. New to Ann Arbor, he lamented that he couldn’t buy any old-style European bread similar to what he grew up with. He began with sourdoughs and created Sour rye dill, whole wheat and Cinnamon Raisin. The new bakery outgrew Ed’s basement and two other locations as his product line developed and customers increased. In 1996 the bakery was acquired by Sandie Niethammer and Thom Byrd, who continued in the tradition of wholesome natural ingredients and handcrafted products.  New breads such as Multi-grain and SiebenSaaten were developed and cookies, muffins, corn bread and granola were added.

17 different breads, including 6 rye breads, are made each week. Specialty breads such as foccacia, braided challah and sub buns can be made to order. Corn bread is one of the specialty items usually available at the Saturday market. Made with honey and buttermilk, it can be eaten with the meal, or for dessert.

Hamburger buns, ciabatta rolls (a long proofed Italian bread, which produces a chewy texture), dinner rolls and party subs can be ordered, and often are available at the market.

Ed’s Bread cookies are a delight to new buyers.  Available in large or small sizes, people often declare their favorite type and return for more.  Chocolate chip, molasses, Snickerdoodles, oatmeal raisin and peanut butter are the standard flavors.

Sandie’s homemade granola is flavorful and loaded with raisins and cranberries.

Muffins are unique to Ed’s Bread at the Saturday market.  Choose from blueberry, apple bran, cranberry orange, lemon poppyseed, almond and chocolate/chocolate chip.  As with the cookies, the muffins are large sized and sure to satisfy morning hunger pangs!

Any item without animal products is considered vegan.  Ed’s Bread’s vegan offerings include all of the rye breads, French, Italian, Multigrain and 7-grain (SiebenSaaten).

The bakery has store hours on Monday, Wednesday through Friday and Sundays from 9 – 4.  Fresh baked bread is available after 2 pm each day.  On Tuesdays and Saturdays the bakery has a booth at the two farmers markets and will participate in the upcoming Winter Market at Liberty School in November.
