AT&T's Pamela Papner Tips for Taking a Break Abroad

Tips from AT&T Executive Director Pamela Papner for taking trips abroad.

With Spring Break upon us and the start of the summer travel season just around the bend, many of you are probably asking yourselves, “Where in the world should I go?”

For those considering an international destination, it’s important to plan ahead. In the wireless world, this means taking a few simple steps ahead of time, so you can enjoy the same level of connectivity abroad as you do at home.

Bring your device.
This may sound like an obvious tip, but some international travelers purposely leave their devices at home because they assume they will not work abroad. Well, the majority of our devices operate on all four GSM frequencies, which means you can use your AT&T smartphone or tablet in more than 210 countries around the world. It also means your friends and family back home will be able to reach you on your regular AT&T mobile number!  How’s that for convenience?  Our portfolio also includes many devices that operate on 3G technology at 2100 MHz, which is required for travel in Japan and South Korea.  For added peace of mind, our Travel Guide will help you check if your device will work in the country or countries you’re planning to visit.

Use your device.
Are you one of those travelers who will take your mobile device overseas but only use it as a camera or alarm clock? Well, if your daily mobile routine at home involves a healthy dose of tweeting, surfing, texting, emailing, posting or talking, imagine all the wonderful things you’ll want to share during your trip.  We offer a great selection of discount roaming packages for calling, messaging and data usage abroad so you can enjoy all the great features and functionality of your device while receiving significant cost savings.

Ready your device.  Sometime between booking your global getaway and packing your suitcase, it’s a good idea to make sure your device is travel-ready.

  • Be sure that international service has been activated on your account before traveling abroad. You can verify or activate service in advance of your travels by visiting att.com/myatt or by giving us a call at 800-335-INTL (4685).
  • Determine which of our discount roaming packages will best fit your wireless needs during your travels.  For example, if you know you’ll be using your device to get GPS directions, browse the Internet or upload content, I strongly recommend adding one of our Data Global Add-On packages which gives you a bucket of data for as low as $30/month.  (See the tip below for helping you find the data package that will suit your needs best.)
  • Be advised that streaming audio and video can use a lot of data.  Consider tracking your data usage upon arrival abroad, using either your device’s native usage tracker or a tracking app, such as MyAT&T or a third-party app.
  • Purchase an international plug adapter so you can keep your device charged and ready for action.

Tip for Picking the Perfect Data Package

We offer three Data Global Add-On packages that offer discount rates in over 140 countries – 120MB for $30/mo; 300MB for $60/mo; and 800MB for $120/mo. How do you know which one will best meet your data usage needs during your travels? Take a look at your average monthly data usage on past AT&T billing statements, and estimate your data needs based on the number of days you will be traveling abroad. For example, if you typically use 900MB during a 30-day billing cycle and you’ll be traveling abroad for 10 days, the 300MB will most likely be your best option.
