Family Friendly Fun for the New Year's Holiday

Looking for something to do while saying goodbye to 2011 or hello to 2012? Read on for ideas.

If a game night with the kids won't do and you're itching to get out somewhere, anywhere for Dec. 31, or Jan. 1 for that matter. Read on for our family friendly picks.

Informative and Fun

  • Where: Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, 220 E. Ann St.
  • When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 31 and noon-5 p.m. Jan. 1
  • Pricing: $10 for ages 2 and up, free for younger than 2 and for members
  • Why Go: The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is open New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so it's the perfect chance for some fun. Its "Hands-On Holidays" let you meet mushers and sled dogs from the Mid-Union Sled Haulers, and you can view dog sledding presentations at 1 p.m.  and 3 p.m. both days. Also check out its ongoing exhibits, including  "Geakiac", which stands for Gear Enabled Analog Keyboard Input And Computer, and its displays on space, solar energy, and plenty more.

Shoe Year's Day Hike

  • Where: Waterloo Recreation Area, 17030 Bush Road, Chelsea
  • When: 11 a.m. Jan. 1
  • Price: Free with a Recreation Passport, which costs $10 and gets you into all state parks and state boat launches all year long. Click here for details.
  • Why Go: Start 2012 out right with a bit of fresh air and activity at Waterloo Recreation Area. Meet at the Eddy Discovery Center, take a hike, get a chance at winning a gift card, and enjoy time around the bonfire and snacks afterwards. Be sure to dress for the weather, and bring a can of tuna to benefit Gleaners.
