Saline Site Part of Historic Cancer Research Study

Faurecia Saline is serving as an enrollment site for the American Cancer Society event.

Faurecia Saline is serving as an enrollment site for a monumental American Cancer Society research study.

The project, entitled Cancer Prevention Study-3, is open to the public and is accepting signups at a handful of Washtenaw County locations.

The study will aim to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Men and women who are willing to commit to the long-term study must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer (with the exception of basal or squamous cell skin cancer).

To enroll in the study, individuals provide a waist measurement, give a small blood sample and complete a short enrollment survey at the enrollment site. A longer, more comprehensive survey will be completed at home.

Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out short follow-up surveys every few years. The study will enroll a diverse population of 300,000 people across the United States, with the study having enrolled nearly 140,000 to date.

Those interested in enrolling are encouraged to make an appointment as spaces will be limited. Appointments can be made by going to www.cancer.org/annarborcps3 or by calling 1-888-604-5888.

Once the appointment is made, participants can enroll at a number of locations, including:

  • 777 Building: 777 E. Eisenhower, Ann Arbor, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 2
  • Washtenaw Community College: 4800 E. Huron River, Ann Arbor, 2-8 p.m. Nov. 1
  • Faurecia Saline: 601 Woodland Drive, Saline, noon-6 p.m. Nov. 1

"For the first time in Washtenaw County, these companies and the American Cancer Society will partner to impact this groundbreaking study with the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations," the cancer group said in a written statement.
