Here are five things to know about Saline today, July 2, 2012.

Meet Chief Hrinik

Saline's new Chief of will begin work in the Saline Police Department today. Hrinik will be sworn in by Clerk Dianne Hill in the morning so that he can begin duties. A ceremonial swearing in will take place at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to meet Chief Hrinik at a meet-and-greet taking place at 4 p.m. It takes place at Saline City Hall.

It's going to be another hot one, with temperatures reaching 93 Monday. There's a chance of thunderstorms in the evening. The longterm forecast calls for high temperatures in the 90s all week, except Thursday, when the temperature is only expected to hit 89. The high temperatures are expected to fall into the mid-80s by Sunday.

With hot temperatures and dry conditions that have already caused the Saline Area Fire Department to issue a burn ban, Chief Craig Hoeft is asking residents as they celebrate July 4.

Dylan Mulder Plays in Football All-Star Game

Dylan Mulder, a member of the Saline High School Class of 2012, kicked an extra point on for the East All Stars in a 59-7 loss to the West. Mulder represented Saline in the 32nd annual Michigan High School Football Coaches Association all-star game, played at Alma College’s Bahlke Field June 30.

Does Anyone Remember Coin-Operated Minnow Machines?

In 1958, George Washburn, who managed a fishery in Saline, said his firm would begin to sell coin-operated vending machines that would provide minnows to fishermen.
