Saline Community Garden Presents First Annual Pumpkin Contest

The goal of the contest is to spread awareness and pumpkin seeds!

The Saline Community Gardens, located behind the one-room school house on Woodland Drive in Saline, is sponsoring a pumpkin contest to raise awareness about the patch.

Organizers hope the contest raises interest in the garden, which could lead to expansion, Those interested in growing pumpkins can register through Saline Community Education from now until May 27.

Joseph Freeman, of , wants to let people in the know what the garden is all about, and that it is open to anyone who would like to register for a plot.

“There has been interest in expanding or adding an additional site somewhere else in the city,’ Freeman said. “However, there has not been a tipping point of interest to push us into new construction.”

That is where the pumpkin contest comes in.

“It takes a dedicated person to grow a pumpkin,” Freeman said. “It takes a dedicated person to make a great community."

Those entering the contest may grow their pumpkins on their own property, but for those who don’t have a place to nurture pumpkin plants, the Saline Community Garden does have space available upon request.

According to the Saline Community Garden website, the garden is an organization dedicated to community building and healthy living. Friends and neighbors are encouraged to come together to grow fruits and vegetables, while celebrating the community around them.

“For the most part it (pumpkin contest) is meant to be a fun activity for anyone who wants to participate, and in the end, we will probably have a fall meal to celebrate,” Freeman said.
