Saline Community Education Summer Camp Will Be Action Packed

Register now or later for a summer of fun-filled activities from Saline's Before & After School Care Program,

The calendar is set for Summer Camp 2011 through Saline Community Education.  Ten weeks of action packed summer activities and field trips are planned for enrollees, anytime between June 22 and August 26.

Each week has a theme, at least one field trip, and room for anyone who wants to join in the fun. Summer campers are separated into two age groups, K-3 and 4th grade and up. The maximum age limit is 14, and tuition is $43 per day. The camp is open to all districts, not just Saline.

Jen Barnard is the Before and After School Care Program Specialist for Saline Community Education, and is excited about the flexibility offered to parents for this year’s camp.

“Parents don’t have to finalize their dates for the first part of the camp until June 1,” Barnard said. “They can pick and choose what days they want, whether its full-time or just on a field trip or any other days.”

Some of the field trips on the schedule include miniature golf, the Toledo Zoo, the Jiffy Factory, Jump City, and Maplewood Lanes bowling alley. Kids will swim at the Saline Recreation Center, visit parks, and have PJ and Movie days, among countless other activities.

Brian Puffer is the Community Education Director in Saline.

“I’m bringing my kids to our camp,” he said. “It’s something new each week. There is so much to do.”

Weekly themes range from Treasure Island to Around the World. There are magic shows and beach days and hot-dog cook outs. Snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon. Campers need to bring their own lunches.

Barnard also commented on the competency of her staff.

“We don’t have a lot of turnover in our staff,” she said. “One of our head teachers has been in the same position for twenty-one years now.”

The majority of the staff has been working for the Saline program for 5-10 years, all are thoroughly screened, interviewed, trained and certified in first aid.

“I also hire college students, many with education majors, to be assistants,” Barnard said.

Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will take place at Liberty school.

“Safety Town and other summer enrichment classes will all be at Liberty school, under one roof,” Puffer said. “So if a camper is enrolled in one of these other activities, camp counselors can walk them right down to where they are supposed to be.”
