Residents May Need to Disinfect Drinking Wells

The county environmental health division is advising residents to disinfect wells that have experienced flooding.

The Environmental Health Division of Washtenaw County Public Health is advising residents to disinfect their drinking water wells if the recent heavy rains caused any flooding around wells.

The appropriate time to disinfect is after any flood waters have receded, according to an advisory released Thursday. Residents should not consume any well water if the well has been recently submerged by lake, river, pond or storm water until the well has been properly disinfected.

Information about testing drinking water wells for bacteria and disinfecting them is available by at the county's website.
