Cozy Library Book Store Has a New Name

The Saline District Library's book store is now known as The Corner Book Shop.

The book store at the now has a name! Several months ago the Friends of theLibrary unveiled a contest asking for customers to name the book store.  A committee studied the 138 entries and after some thoughtful discussions and a vote, the name was selected: Corner Book Shop.

The winner is Lexi Morris,  an 11-year old sixth grader who chose the name Corner Book Shop “because the store is in the corner of the library and it would sound like a very cozy, old-fashioned store that people would want to come to.”

For submitting the winning entry, Morris received a $25 Corner Book Shop gift certificate, which she has promptly given back to the community. In the spirit of the Friends of the Library, about half of the gift certificate went to buy books for Saline Area Social Services; the other half is going for books to donate to her classroom.

The committee hired  graphic artist Keith McGuire to create a logo that would reflect the ambience and dynamic of the store.  The logo is done and a sign, banner, brochures and bookmarks are being created.

“We are happy that the Friends have created such a successful book store. Many people are not aware that Saline does have a used book store, and it is the Corner Book Shop, located in the front lobby of the library” said library director Leslee Niethammer. “With a new logo to promote, we expect the Corner Book Shop will become well known throughout the community.”

Profits from the book sales enrich the library community in many ways. Each year the Friends of the Library fully fund the summer reading programs, in addition to Books for Babies and special purchases. The pergola patio was a gift in 2009, which is enjoyed by many during the warm weather.

The book store is overseen by a committee of dedicated people whose ideas and hard work have developed it into the well-stocked and efficient place it is today. Fully trained and enthusiastic volunteers work in pairs during their shift, making sure the shelves are stocked and prepared to answer customer questions. There are over 50 active Friends of the Library volunteers working in the many different aspects of maintaining a book store. In addition to the book store hours, the Friends hold a Bag of Books sale the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Friends are always looking for volunteers. Forms are available at the Corner Book Shop. For more information, please check the website at http://salinelibrary.org/friends or call (734) 944-0625.

Donations are accepted at the Corner Book Shop any time the library is open. Books, games, puzzles, CDs (books and music), and DVDs in good condition are gratefully accepted. Friends are unable to take LPs, magazines, encyclopedias, or condensed books.

Hours are posted at both entrances of the library, as well as online at http://salinelibrary.org/friends/calendar.  The store is open 160 hours a month, usually 7 days a week.
