5 Things: Empty Bowls Fundraiser, Christmas Tree Pickup and More

The Weather

Winter is here. Weather.com calls for a high of 28 with a snow shower. and occasionalwinds gusting over 40 miles per hour The low tonight will be 15. Less than an inch of snow will accumulate. Sunrise is at 8:04 a.m. and sunset is at 5:15 p.m. After a chilly Tuesday, the temperatures will climb back above freezing Wednesday.

Empty Bowls Returns in February

Saline Area Schools arts students and students from Saline High School's music and culinary arts programs will showcase their talent for the second annual Empty Bowls Benefit for Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County. The event takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, at

Visual arts students will make bowls. The culinary arts students will fill them with soup which will be served with bread. Student musicians will perform throughout the evening.

Register for The Fifth Corner 5K

The second annual Saline Winterfest will once again feature a 5K run benefitting The Fifth Corner teen center. The event takes place at 9:30 a.m., Jan. 28, immediately following the opening ceremony. It starts on the south side of Henry Street in the parking lot near the water tower. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Registration on the day of the race is $20 a person or $40 for a family. Tracking the Hornets

Classes resume Jan. 9, but the Saline Hornets are keeping a busy schedule. Tuesday, the freshmen (2:30 p.m.), junior varsity (4 p.m.) and varsity boys' basketball teams (5:30 p.m.) are at Canton.  Wednesday, the varsity wrestlers are at Ann Arbor Pioneer for a double dual agains the Pioneers and Railsplitters. Thursday, the girls basketball teams are at Ida. The varsity swimming team is at Tecumseh.

Christmas Tree Pickup

The is picking up discarded Christmas trees. Pickup for residents west of Ann Arbor Street takes place Jan. 5 and 12. For residents east of Ann Arbor Street, pickup is Jan. 6 and 13. According to the city website, all trees taller than six feet must be cut in half. Tree stands, ornaments and materials must be removed.
