Big Changes on School Board

The outlook for the school board election ballot sure has changed in a week. Last Sunday, school board president Lisa Slawson and Dawn Ducca were the only people who'd announced intention to run for school board. On Monday, Slawson announced she wasn't running. That same day, Smita Nagpal and Diane Friese filed to run at the county clerk's office. On Friday, Karen Delhey and Paul Hynek announced their candidacy. As of now, there are four candidates for two seats. Ducca has not yet decided whether she will run.

Police Car Smashed into While Officer Investigates Crash

On July 31, Saline Police Officer Mike Snook was investigating one crash when an at Michigan Avenue and Industrial. The driver of the SUV, who'd experienced a health issue, was taken to hospital.

From kids' fishing to car shows and from volleyball to blackjack, you can be the star of Saline Summerfest Aug. 10-11. In other Summerfest news, you can at the Saline Street machines show Saturday. And this year, the Saline Firefighters' Firehouse Chicken broil is doing take out orders.

Saline Schools Make The Grade But Must Address Achievement Gap

Heritage Elementary School students score in the 90th percentile of Michigan schools when it comes to performance. Yet despite receiving an "A" grade from the Michigan Department of Education in data released last week, it is one of three Saline schools that have been designated as "Focus Schools." Heritage, Pleasant Ridge and Woodland Meadows are in the top 10 percent of schools in the state in terms of widest achievement gaps — the disparity between the top 30 and bottom 30 percent of students. The schools are now charged with bridging the gap. Saline High School and Harvest Elementary School both achieved “Reward School” status, which goes to the top five percent of all Michigan schools in the annual top-to-bottom ranking and the top five percent making the greatest academic progress over the past four years.

Olympic Fever

Four Saline Area Girl Scouts were at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Click here for a roundup of pictures and videos sent by the Girl Scouts. And on Tuesday, Gym America, Saline Recreation, and Community Education teamed up to at Saline High School. Kids participated in gymnastics and track and field events, collected their gold medal and then watch the Olympians do their thing on the giant screen television in the high school's Commons area.
