I was born and raised in the San Francisco East Bay where the weather and the terrain are perfect for biking so I always enjoyed outdoor cycling.  I still remember my first bike, green with lots of rainbow streamers!  At 16, for Christmas instead of a car I got a new, top of the line, 18 speed bike.

Seven years ago, while we were living in New Jersey, the local YMCA started SPINNING classes. After working as a mortgage underwriter for many years I had acquired 10 more pounds than I wanted so I was very interested in indoor cycling. Because of my long commute to work I got home after dark so biking outside was not possible even if the weather was good enough. I was immediately hooked! I took two or three classes a week and within six months had lost all 10 pounds.

My enthusiasm showed because soon two of the instructors at the "Y" asked me about getting certified to teach. I decided to get certified because I believed in the benefits of cycling and wanted to have fun—what  could be more fun than helping others reach their fitness goals?

The beauty of indoor cycling is that each person is in control of the resistance of their own bike, so are always in control of their individual workout. Having people at completely different levels of fitness in the same class is never a problem. I have had tri-athletes and beginning bikers in the same class and both had a perfect workout for their individual needs.

Cycling is also a great cross trainer. In my last session I had two high school cross country runners enroll because they learned cycling would strengthen them as runners.

Unless you have a serious health problem you can probably cycle even if you have not been involved in a fitness program. Cycling can help you burn calories, fight fatigue, lower your heart rate, reduce stress, and build muscle. Of course you should always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

I still love to be outdoors on a bike trail, but I really appreciate how I can design a ride to meet my workout goal for any given day with an indoor bike. When off the bike, I love college football, golf, reading a good book, baking, and helping out at church.

I encourage anyone interested in improving their health and fitness level to try a
class.  I have more endurance, and strength, less fat, a faster metabolism, lower blood pressure, and more energy now than I did when I took my first SPIN class seven years ago. I hope to see you on a bike soon. HAPPY TRAILS!
