Business is Blooming for Maureen’s Designs

Customer service grows best in Saline's local flower shop.

Maureen Goeman was working non-stop on a funeral spray that was bound for Ypsilanti. With busy hands snipping, arranging, and wiring she still welcomed visitors to her flower shop, answered the phone, and talked ribbons and delivery schedules with her husband and business partner, Jack Goeman.

“I need a wide, sheer one from the back” she said, “white or pink.”

She did all this without missing a beat. It was just a routine, busy day at Mauren's Designs.

Maureen is in the business of customer service, whether someone needs one bloom or twenty, or twenty centerpieces with a dozen blooms each, she will make sure they get it. She custom designs whatever is needed around any theme, color scheme or special request.

Flowers don’t necessarily even need to be in season.

“Sometimes spring flowers like tulips, daffodils or hyacinth are hard to get out of season,” Goeman said. "But I know some grower somewhere finds a way to grow something year round. I never say ‘no’ until I make a call first.”

Perhaps it is the acute attention to detail and years of experience creating just the right bouquets that make Maureen’s Designs a frequent wedding stop for brides to be. According to Goeman, January and February are prime months for wedding planning. She takes wedding consultations by appointment. A first visit is free and can take one and a half to two hours.

“Since I have never done two weddings the same, it a takes a few hours of talking and looking at pictures to find what the bride likes,” Goeman said. “Once we figure that out, things progress pretty quickly.”

Goeman’s shop and cooler are always stocked with beautiful pieces. The glass vases on a floor -to-ceiling shelf shine like jewels when the sun comes in from through the window. Plants and greenery greet visitors at the door, and the aroma alone is worth stopping in for. If Goeman doesn’t have what a customer is looking for,  her suppliers are always in stock, even for short notice.

“I don’t have to have everything I need set and ready to go,” she said. "Sometimes I can call and have flowers here by the same afternoon if needed.”

Maureen’s Designs is located at 101 S. Ann Arbor St. in Salin and is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday.

Don’t fret however, if you are running late for a pick up at the end of the day.  “Just give me a call to let me know you are still coming,” she said. “I’ll wait for ya. I am always happy to accommodate customers.”
