A Guide to the Tuesday Farmers Market

If you are looking for fresh produce, baked goods or other items, the Farmers Market has a wide variety to choose from.

The Tuesday Saline Farmers Market, located at the from 3 p.m.  to 7 p.m. each week, is a place to buy home-made goods at reasonable prices. People and businesses come from the surrounding areas to purchase a wide range of goods from the market.

“I come for the freshest, locally grown food. I like supporting local farmers, rather than the bigger stores. I come every week,” said Belleville resident Amy Slaven.

Produce is the mainstay of the market, with farmers coming in from Britton, Milan and beyond. Adam Fronhofer recently purchased the Goldenrod farm outside of Milan and is in the process of getting the organic farm back up and running after three years of inactivity. Kapnick Orchards from Britton offered fruits, including fresh cherries and strawberries, as well as some vegetables. There are also plants available for flower garden do-it-yourselfers.

Fresh baked goods were also abundant. Pam’s Sweet Creations offers a range of goods, including baklava and macaroons. Pam Zibbel drives all the way from Adrian, and only attends the Saline Farmers Market. Stone Heath Breads and Bakery come in from Brooklyn with breads and other items baked fresh daily. Ed’s Bread is a local bakery from Saline that has a variety of breads.

Greta Niethammer recommended the sunflower loaf and cornbread.

“We come to the farmers market to let people know about us,” said Niethammer.  “It’s been a tremendous help. The market is great.”

The market also offers some quality goods that are harder to find. Mike Grady offers hand-made wood work and the Cellar-door Soap Company from Taylor and Celtic Dairy in Milan both offer home-made soap. Fresh is a Saline micro-roaster that offers quality fresh-roasted coffee at an affordable price. Oak Hill Farm offers its honey and beeswax products, including candles and lotion bars as well as its popular fresh honey.

Local Saline author Sharon Johnson attends the market and offers her children’s book for perusal. The Friends of the Library also get in on the act, bring out some of The Corner Book Shop selection or patrons to browse.

The farmers market is open on Tuesdays from June 7 through September 27. The Saturday markets takes place from 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot off South Ann Arbor Street.
