Safe Kids Huron Valley Offers Free Child Seat Inspections

The Ann Arbor agency will offer free child seat inspections in conjunction with National Seat Check Day on Sept. 22.

Safe Kids Huron Valley, a non-profit organization working to prevent unintentional injuries to children, will host a free car seat check event at Suburban Chevrolet in Ann Arbor on Sept. 22.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages 1-12 in the United States.

"What’s alarming is that many of these children were not wearing a seatbelt or were not restrained properly in a child safety seat," the coalition said in a press release.

With many different car seat models on the market, often parents get confused which one is best for their child.

Safe Kids Huron Valley will celebrate Child Passenger Safety Week on Sept. 16-22 by conducting local car seat checkup events for families and their children.

“In just a few minutes, our certified technicians can help parents and caregivers, ranging from those with new babies to longtime parents, get the peace of mind that comes from knowing how to properly remove and reinstall child safety and booster seats for children of all ages,” said Jennifer Shea, Safe Kids Huron Valley child passenger safety technician and trauma prevention specialist for C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be answering child passenger safety questions from their Twitter account at 2 p.m. Sept. 19. Car seat safety experts will be available to answer questions on car seats and how to safe travel with children of all ages. Just follow the hashtag #TheRightSeat to join the chat.
