"We are one of several official county cooling locations," said Leslee Niethammer, director of the Saline District Library. "Our library is a great place to cool down. Not only are we air conditioned, we offer so many things to do, so you don't just stare at a wall."

Another local option to beat the heat is the Saline Rec Center, which is home to the community's only public swimming pool.

Public health officials are encouraging all residents to take steps to avoid heat-related illness, especially when temperatures remain high for several days.

Prevent Heat-Related Illness

  • Drink extra water to stay hydrated. Avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • Check on family, neighbors and friends. Help them get to a cool place if necessary.
  • Never leave children, older adults or pets in parked vehicles. Vehicles heat up very quickly and can become dangerous, even with the windows open.
