Keep These Safety Tips in Mind When Using Fireworks

New laws may make it easier to buy and sell fireworks, but they don't make them safer, so here are 10 tips for a fun and safe fireworks show.

Oh say, have you seen or heard more fireworks this summer?

In Michigan, it became legal this year to sell bottle rockets, Roman candles and other flying devices to consumers. The new laws are designed to generate sales tax revenue and registration fees. Sellers pay $1,000 annually for a permanent site or $600 for a tent or other seasonal, outdoor location.

The only registered seller in Washtenaw County is Firepower Fireworks, located at 2000 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti.

Cities and townships can’t block sales and have limited power to restrict where and when individuals can light mini-explosives that whine, bang and boom. The new law bars municipalities from regulating fireworks use on federal holidays – such as July 4 – or the day right before and after.

Saline Police detective Don Lupi said looser laws don't make fireworks safer.

“Even though Michigan has made these fireworks legal we strongly urge people to take extra precautions to be safe," Lupi said.

Lupi said that people having backyard shows need to be cognizant of their neighbors.

"We want the public to be aware that we also have a local noise ordinance that may apply. If we have a complaint from the public we have an obligation to follow up on it," Lupi said. “Please respect your neighbors, have fun and be safe."

The American Pyrotechnics Association website also offers several fireworks safety tips from the USCPSC and the National Council on Fireworks Safety, which recommend that consumers:

  1. Always read and follow label directions
  2. Always have an adult present
  3. Only buy from  – never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
  4. Only ignite fireworks outdoors, light only one at a time and never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
  5. Dispose of fireworks properly
  6. Be sure to have water handy
  7. Never give fireworks to small children
  8. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place
  9. Never throw fireworks at another person
  10. Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers
