In recognition of national Mental Health Awareness month in May, Still Waters Counseling, a Saline clinic specializing in treating mental and behavioral disorders, is offering self-help and counseling books for sale at greatly reduced prices.  In exchange, each book purchase will go towards a special fund to provide counseling at the clinic for the uninsured or underinsured.  From now until the end of May, gently used copies of self-help and children’s books from the clinic’s extensive collection will be available for purchase from the clinic at 137 Keveling Drive, Saline (9.00am to 5.00pm M-F).  Buyers can decide how much they can afford for each book but the minimum contribution is $5.00.  There is no maximum contribution amount.  The public is also invited to donate unwanted counseling, self-help, or children’s books to the collection.

Although contributions are NOT tax-deductible, each purchase will go towards assisting those in need in the community get the help they need.  Buyers will also benefit from reading discounted books on subjects ranging from parenting to attention deficit hyperactive disorder.

Dr. Smita Nagpal, licensed psychologist and co-owner of Still Waters Counseling, knows only too well that for many uninsured or underinsured people in the community, psychotherapy is simply out of reach.  “Over the past few years, the recession has forced people to make tough choices.  When it’s a decision between paying for food and paying for therapy, it’s understandable that counseling is considered nonessential.  It’s a shame though because the benefits of therapy are immeasurable,” she said.  By raising money for Still Waters’ special community fund in in this way, Dr. Nagpal hopes those in need will come forward and take advantage of the opportunity to talk to someone about their concerns.
