Varsity Blues Show Was a Big Hit

The summer show comes to completion after blockbuster turnouts and performances.

Varsity Blues and Company, a community cast of 110 Saline students, performed their summer blockbuster production of Disney Mania over the weekend. The show was so well attended that the first balcony of the Ellen Ewing Performance Arts Center was opened up to ticket holders on Friday and Saturday nights.

Three casts, Varsity, Junior Varsity and Kids Cast, performed over twenty numbers from the world of Disney. Songs included "Kiss The Girl" from The Little Mermaid, "Life Is A Highway" from Cars, and Everybody Wants To Be A Cat from "The Aristocats." There were specialty dance numbers, a choreographed sword fight from Pirates of the Carribbean, and a mini-musical, Hercules, performed by the Varsity cast.

An emotional tribute was made to the seniors who performed their very last Varsity Blues Show Saturday night. Many in the cast were in tears, including Director Patricia Douglas.

There will be another Varsity Blues production in December and auditions for next year's cast will take place in the Spring of 2012.

Varsity Blues is a non-profit organizationfunded by ticket sales, concessions, flowers sales, and raffling off pieces of the set. This year's show pieces featured many giant or life-sized, hand-crafted set pieces of different Disney characters. Varsity Blues also accepts sponsorships from area businesses.

"I'd like to thank everyone who was involved in Varsity Blues this year, including the local business sponsors," said Joe Di Mauro, President and Chairman of Varsity Blues. Sponsors were highlighted within the pages of the Disney Mania program, as well as on the Varsity Blues Website, and were listed during the show.
