Two Twelve Arts Center To Hold "Carnival of Art" Saturday

Family fun day will feature music, art activities and treats.

If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at tie-dyeing, pottery, calligraphy and more, don’t miss the third annual “Carnival of Art” at , 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

This free event for all ages offers pottery wheel demonstrations in the studio, and the chance to get your hands into clay and make and paint your own hand-built tile.

Shibori dyeing – a form of tie-dyeing – is set from 10 a.m. to noon, when participants can create their own dyed piece of silk for a headband.

Artist and instructor Keith McGuire will teach drawing from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be sessions in Japanese calligraphy, and making magnets or pop tart books from noon to 2 p.m.; and Zentangle demos and nature collages from 2 to 4 p.m.

Artist Holly Losee will lead a community weaving project from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and offer a selection of items for participants to weave into the creation. The finished product will be hung in the art center.

All day events include making flower pins, creating shaving cream marbled paper, sidewalk chalk, face painting, giant bubbles, and mural painting. Hula hoop contests will be held at 10 a.m. at 2 p.m.

The Maracas of Invincibility – “the coolest punk mariachi folk band you have ever, and will ever meet” – are back by popular demand, and will play at 9 and 11 a.m. The Saline band features Caroline de Vries on vocals and lead guitar; Beverly Chou on guitar and pot pans; Hannah Gingerich on keyboards, saxophone and maracas; Grace Bowie on maracas, keyboard and other percussion; and Alison Hendricks on lead vocals pot pans and recorder.

“They played last year and were great,” said Gaines Collins, the center’s special events coordinator.

Afternoon music will be provided by Ypsilanti-based Community Records L3C.

Carnival-goers, who will enjoy free treats of sno-cones, popcorn, and cotton candy, will be given free raffle tickets for drawings to be held throughout the day.

“We’ve got lots of prizes including gift baskets, and every two hours and twelve minutes we’ll have drawings for 212 T-shirts and gift certificates,” Collins said.

Visitors may donate to two fund-raisers: “Milk Money for Mali,” helping orphans in northwest Africa; and “Poured Out,” providing clean water in Haiti; tour the center’s new location at 216 W. Michigan Ave., meet the staff and learn about summer camps and classes.
