"Super Fun" Family Fun Day Held at Two Twelve Arts Center in Saline

Families turned out all day for some hands on art projects, live music and more.

On Saturday, located at 216 W. Michigan Ave. in Saline, hosted the community with its annual Family Fun Day Carnival of Art. The event was well-attended.

The fun day is an effort to showcase what the center has to offer, give back to the community, and accept donations for two charities.

“It has been such a relaxed, fun morning,” said Michele Montour. She was teaching visitors how to create Shibori Dyed scarves. "Shibori means ‘resist’ in Japanese. We use different types of tying for different patterns.”

Shibori art is what eventually led to the popular art form of tye-dye.

There was music and entertainment for all ages. Artist stations included weaving, textiles, shaving cream art, face painting, tattoos and a drawing class taught by Two Twelve staffer Keith McGuire. Rob Kinsey and Amara Karapas, also of Two Twelve, created a mural outline for all kids to contribute too.

At 10 a.m. there was a hula-hoop contest, followed by raffle drawings every two hours and twelve minutes. Kids played with sidewalk chalk and  bubbles, and all enjoyed live performances by the Maracas of Invincibility. They are an all-girl band who covered songs from different genres, ranging from folk to a rendition of the ‘80’s alternative Violent Femmes song, “Blister in the Sun.”

Along with all of the fun were two donation tables to collect funds for charity. One was Milk Money For Mali, which helps orphaned children in Africa. The other was an organization called Poured Out, which offers disaster relief to stricken areas who need clean water. They use a water diffuser, created by a Grand Rapids, company called Hydraid, to purify water without electricity or chlorine. Carlee Greene is a Poured Out representative who was at the family fun day to talk about their mission.

“We are mainly in Haiti, but have recently helped tornado victims in Tuscaloosa and Joplin,” Greene said.

Crowds continued to be steady throughout the day.  For more information on two Twelve Arts Center or to donate to their causes, call 734-944-ARTS or visit their website at www.twotwelvearts.org.
