No Excuses Performs at Brewed Awakenings

The Ann Arbor band entertained for people enjoying a night out in Saline.

No Excuses, a four-member band based in Ann Arbor, played two sets of music for guests at Brewed Awakenings coffee shop in Saline on Saturday evening.

The group of musicians, from Michigan and Ohio, play multiple instruments, and perform original works as well as covers from rock and folk to pop.

“A little old, a little new, a little original,’ said Claire Stevens, lead vocalist of the group.

Stevens also plays viola. Saturday night, she picked up viola and warmed up the crowd with a cover of the Rolling Stones song, As Tears Go By.

No excuses performed a handful of original tunes, and covers from Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Shocking Blue, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and more.

The original songs are mostly written by Mary Henderson, who not only sings, but plays rhythm guitar, keyboard, banjo and foot tambourine as well. She said the group is not limited to acoustic sets and noted that they recently played an electric set for a Jam for Vets benefit.

No Excuses is seeking a drummer and percussionist, but don’t mind waiting for just the perfect fit.

“We need someone who can play percussion for something like this event, like bongos,” Henderson said. “But we need someone who can play drums too for our electric sets.”

No Excuses has been together for about a year and a half, but just added Jeremy Frey on bass earlier this year. George Hinman is the lead guitarist and also plays the mandolin. The group is available for private parties, benefits, coffee shops, restaurants or just about any other venue. They can be reached through their website at www.thenoexcuses.com.

Brewed Awakenings often features live entertainment on weekend evenings, including Open Mic Nights on Saturdays. For more information visit www.brewedawakeningscafe.com.
