The Fifth Corner Seeks Program Director

Saline's teen center is looking for a part-time employee to coordinate activities.

Saline's student-driven community center,  open for students eligible for enrollment in Saline Middle School and Saline High School, is looking for a program director.

"We're looking for someone with an outgoing personality, who loves to work with youth, and who is organized and can manage programming at the The Fifth Corner," said Rhoads.

Rhoads said the program director works 10-15 hours a week, depending on the activities scheduled. The will make $500 to $600 a month.

The program director is not required to be at the center during all operating hours, but is responsible for making sure monitors are on duty.

There is no charge for students to attend The Fifth Corner during regular hours. Special events and Fridays at the Fifth have  nominal fees.

The Fifth Corner's Operating Board is accepting nominations through June with interviews and a decision made in July. A new director is expected to be ready to work by August.

Position Summary:  Support the mission of the organization to offer programs and initiatives based on a model of positive youth development practice, with an emphasis on diversity and youth-driven leadership.    The Program Director’s essential functions focus on program design,  implementation, and evaluation.  High quality programs result from collaborative supervision of program staff and building meaningful community partnerships.

 

Essential Functions: 

Programs < 40 % of time> – Responsible for a number of duties related to program design, implementation and evaluation including:

  • Working with staff to provide program planning for the weekly, special projects and events, and the summer program. 
  • Coordinating and supporting Operating Board.
  • Assessing new program projects and initiatives and coordinate their implementation with Operating Board support.
  • Overseeing documentation of program and volunteer participation
  • Supporting leadership training and opportunities for teens across programs
  • Building strong interpersonal relationships with teens in the Center, especially during drop-in and other program times
  • Providing program evaluation including:
  • End of the year and summer program evaluation, such as through surveys, focus groups and collecting anecdotal evidence;
  • On-going program quality assessment, through observation and staff reflection;
  • On-going documentation of events through participation numbers, written descriptions, and photos; and
  • Outlining recommendations and strategies for continual program improvement
  • Supporting and helping coordinate the Board’s Program Committee and their goals & objectives

 

Community Outreach < 20 % of time> – Responsible for a number of duties in teen recruitment and outreach, developing & maintaining community partnerships, marketing & public relations, and working with volunteers including: 

  • Responding to community contacts including parents, community organizations, partners, and teens.
  • Meeting with community contacts to build and support organizational partnerships.
  • Ensuring development of program marketing materials including posters, flyers, web page updates and monthly calendar. 
  • Connecting with community volunteers and others interested in learning more about The Fifth Corner. 

 

Fund Development and Finance: < 15 % of time> – Responsible for supporting fundraising in partnership with the Administrative Board through:

  • Providing support for:
    • Program related fundraisers
    • Strategizing new funding opportunities.
  • Preparing annual program budget requests
  • Tracking program expenditures and correlate with budgeted program income and revenue in collaboration with the Treasurer

 

Supervision/Staff Support: < 15 % of time> – Responsible for supervision, support and oversight of volunteer staff including:.

  • Recruiting and training of new program volunteers.
  • Supervision and monitoring of volunteers to ensure their adherence to requirements.

 

Administration: < 10 % of time> – Responsible for a number of administrative duties and organizational responsibilities, including:

  • Chairing the Operating Board meetings
  • Participating in the Administrative Board meetings
  • Helping develop, support and track goals and objectives in organization strategic planning process

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of youth development practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in program design, implementation and evaluation
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing
  • Ability to multi task, be flexible and adapt
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Experience with diverse populations of youth, adults and community groups
  • Ability to build relationships with community leaders, educators, parents, and youth
  • Experience in collaborative supervision, including reflecting and offering critical feedback
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and ability to learn other software, as needed
  • Ability to fulfill professional responsibilities including:
    • Punctuality
    • Organization and Planning
    • Strong follow-through
    • Ethical behaviour

 

 

Education, Qualifications, Credentials and Experience

  • High School graduate and two years experience working with youth and community projects
  • Or a Bachelors Degree in Adolescent Psychology, Community Program Planning or a related field
  • Or an equivalent combination of education in a related field and experience.
