Electronic Waste Recycling Day to Benefit Saline Teen Center

It's time to gather up the old phones and computers gathering dust in the basement, and use them for a good cause.

On  Saturday the Fifth Corner Teen Center in Saline and the Saline Environmental Commission will host their first ever Electronic Waste Recycling Fundraiser. The event will take place at the center, located at 211 Willis Rd. at the corner from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m..

David Rhoads, of the Fifth Corner Board of Directors, explained about how the event came together.

“I was up in Lansing at a Michigan Municipal League Conference, and came across a company called Vintage Tech Recyclers,” he said.

The company agreed to offer their services as a fund raiser for the Fifth Corner.

“They will pay us a few cents per pound on what is collected,” Rhoads said.

A few pennies per pound may not sound like much when your talking about cell phones or computer cords, however, many heavier items will be accepted during the event. People are encouraged to bring their old computer monitors, laptops, TV’s, printers, computers, fax/scanners, stereo systems, cords, video game consoles, keyboards and all other computer parts.

“This is a great opportunity for the (Environmental) Commission to get their name out there and do some good too,” said Rhoads. “Both organizations are giving volunteers to staff the event.”

Volunteers are still needed and will work in two-hour shifts.

Marcus Flood is program director for Fifth Corner. He reports things are going well for the center, but funds raised from the event will definitely help he cause.

“Our wish list is close to completion, but we still need a few things, as well as just general overhead needs,” Flood said.

The teen center seems to have found its niche with middle school students on Friday nights.

“We are averaging 30 kids or more on Fridays now,” Flood said.

Recently, the center had acquired Sumo wrestling suits, and let the kids have at it. Saline Middle School Principal David Raft wore the suit during the day on Friday and wrestled some of the kids to help promote the event.

“It was non-stop sumo that night!” Flood said.
