Betsy Marl, Citizen of the Year 2008

Who will you nominate for Citizen of the Year for 2012?

In 2008, at the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce Saline Salutes banquet, Betsy Marl was honored as Citizen of the Year.

Born to Norman and Lorena Scherdt in 1953, Betsy Marl was born and raised at 220 Russell St. in Saline.

She studied at Saline Area Schools, worked at the local Big Boy and became a first grade teacher in Saline in 1977.

In 1982, Marl was named Michigan Teacher of the Year. Locally, was named Outstanding Young Woman by the Saline Jaycees in 1982 and Outstanding Educator by the Jaycees in 1983. Marl has been an officer in the Saline Education Association, was active in Varsity Blues, parent-teacher associations, and has been a lifelong member at St. Paul United Church of Christ, where she has helped with Sunday school and nursery.

She was married to Gary Marl in 1976. They raised son, Brian, who was born in 1984.

The Saline Area Chamber of Commerce hosts Saline Salutes at 5:30 p.m., April 13 at Saline High School.
