Oh Baby! Saline Pet Store Has Many Newborn Animals

Pets N Things has tiny creatures new to their animal inventory.

, located at 541 E. Michigan Ave. in Saline, prides itself on the best cared-for animals in town. The pet store is currently inundated with new births from new animals in the shop, as well as permanent mating pairs, and invites the public to come in and take a peek.

Currently there is a newborn albino chinchilla, baby crested geckos, fancy leopard geckos, sugar gliders, dwarf hamsters, sand boas, chameleons, and a Congo African grey parrot named Stu.

“We’ve just finished hand feeding Stu a couple of weeks ago,” said Lena Chase, Pets N Things manager. “Which means he’s at a really sweet stage right now.”

Chase talked about the amount of newborns, and whether or not there is a typical breeding season for animals in captivity.

“I think it depends on the breed,” she said. “Take cats for instance, they definitely have a season. We usually see the last litters around November.”

All of the animals are for sale. They have been bred in the store owner’s own home, or in the case of the kittens, rescued, treated and offered by the humane society.

Chris Wright, who will be a senior at Saline High School next month, stopped in to buy crickets. He has several pets, but recently purchased a baby chameleon and named him Waldo.

“I’m a pretty big pet guy,” he said. “I wanted a chameleon last year but by the time I came in it was sold, so I’ve been waiting all this time for the next ones to be born.”

In addition to Waldo, Wright has an iguana, a Columbian red-tailed scorpion named Geronimo, and a snake.

Not yet ready for the store are three newborn blue and gold Macaws.  They will be added to the rest of the Pets N Things family within a month or so.

Chase is clearly in love with her job and all of the animals.

“I get attached,” she said. “But it is very rewarding to see the animals go to good homes.”
