Hornets Swarm over Southgate Anderson

Saline’s balanced attack puts eight goals in the net.

The Saline Hornets ice hockey team rolled over the Southgate Anderson Titans on Tuesday night.  Saline’s offense was running on all cylinders as six different players scored at least one goal for the Hornets en route to an 8-2 victory.

“We had another night of balanced scoring, particularly (Colin) Cederna's line and (DJ) Aben's line.  We had 36 shots, getting the puck to the net and we finished tonight, which is a good feeling,” said Drew Denzin, Saline’s head coach.

Scoring started in the first period for Saline, with Cederna opening scoring with 7:57 left.  James Olsen and Antonio Diaz each added another goal before the horn, extending the Hornet lead to 3-0 at the end of the first.

But Saline wasn’t done scoring.  Aben opened the second period with a goal at 13:12, and Olsen scored his second on a power play not two minutes later.  While Southgate Anderson would break the shutout before the period ended, Saline went into the final intermission with a comfortable 5-1 lead.

The Hornets continued to swarm the Titans in the third.  Diaz’s second goal of the night opened Saline’s scoring at 13:54.  Trevor Carey got a goal to go with his two assists on the night, and Tyler Gross wrapped up the Hornet barrage before the night ended.

Saline’s offense was backed by solid passing and teamwork.  Mike McCullough had three assists, and Carey, Cederna, Diaz and Grant Ellis all added two.

“The great thing about this team, early on, is that there isn't just one player standing out.  We've had years like that.  This year is very balanced; Cederna, Diaz and Carey are clicking.  Aben, Olson, who have played together most of their career, and Ellis, a freshmen, are starting to click.  We've had balanced point production from our top three lines, but these two stood out last night.  Their speed and finishing were the difference,” Denzin said.
