Hornets Crew Finishes Fall Season

Inclement weather canceled the season finale, but Saline's club team performed well throughout the year.

The Saline Hornets’ crew team did not end its season how it would have liked.  Inclement weather canceled the final regatta before any of the races could finish, but Pete Pfeiffer is looking at the positives the team had throughout the season.

“I like how well the team worked together and come together as a team.  We recruited a few new kids for the fall and they really stepped up and did a good job,” said Pfeiffer.

The season started with Saline hosting the Horton Cup Regatta then traveled to Orchard Lake to compete in the Head of the Orchard Regatta.  Rowers Ben Friman, Kyle Girvan, Geoff Gonzalez, Jacob Hargrove, Travis Krause, Alyohsa Makarov, Nick Reuter and Andrew Bonczyk, along with coxswain Victoria Wellings earned the silver medal in the 8 boat for the Hornets.

Early October saw Saline travel deep into Ohio to compete in the Columbus Fall Classic, which has 23 clubs from four states compete.  Friman, Girvan, Hargrove, Krause, Reuter and Bonczyk were joined by Matt Fosdick, Jacob Carlson and coxswain Heather Kiningham in the 8 boat to earn the bronze medal.  Four other boats finished fourth, just off the medal stand, for Saline.

The following week was back in Columbus, this time facing competition from high schools, colleges and masters rowers from eight different states.  Men’s pair Mitch Dellot and Brad Roberts took second place against college teams from Denison and Ohio State as well as other top high schools.  Sophomores Haley Pfeiffer and Alexis Wolff took silver in their first competitive pair race, beating Case Western Reserve’s collegiate pair.

Conditioning for the spring season starts in March, and the team is always looking for new members.  While only a club team for the Hornets, members can earn their varsity letter.  There are no cuts and no prior experience or knowledge is required.

“It is great conditioning and you don’t need to have any experience.  It’s a great sport you can do for life, and [the kids] do a lot together and get along real well,” said Pfeiffer.
