Volunteers with the Canton-based nonprofit Hands of Light in Action are accepting donations of nonperishable items for families affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York.

Items needed include: personal hygiene packages, diapers, formula, soft huggable toys (new or gently used), Clorox bleach/cleaning supplies, water (in cases or 5-gallon jugs), shovels, rakes, sledge hammers, hammers, big brooms, crow bars, dry wall hook, heavy duty gloves, garbage bags, tarps, gift cards for Target, K-Mart, Lowes and Home Depot, and gas cards.

Homemade quilts to provide children displaced from their homes are also needed. Postage for the quilts will be provided by Hands of Light.

Nancy Malone, founder of Hands of Light in Action, said volunteers will be driving to Queens and Brooklyn, NY. on Friday to deliver the items and assist with clean-up efforts.

The nonprofit recently assisted with tornado recovery efforts in Dexter by clearing trees and brush, and providing food to displaced families.

Donations can be dropped off at 4380 Dexter-Pinckney Road in Dexter, or 46902 Mornington Road in Canton.

Financial donations can also be mailed to P.O. Box 87513, Canton, MI. 48188.
