Twenty years ago, Roy Ernst, on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music had the idea that adults 50 and older could learn to play music just as well as kids - and get just as many benefits from the experience. His idea did so well that 20 years later the New Horizons Music Association boasts over 185 community bands in most of the 50 States, as well as international roots establishing
themselves in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Ireland. The phenomenal program continues to grow and expand. That’s some Big Band!
As Roy Ernst has noted of older musicians: “I started thinking that they would probably enjoy the things that kids in high school enjoy in their music programs—working with other people to prepare a musical performance, the
challenge and accomplishment afforded by learning music, and having events to look forward to, like performances…”
The Saline New Horizons Band was organized in 2004 by Dr. Joseph and Mary Labuta to bring the same experiences to adults in the Saline area. Were you one of the estimated 15-20 percent of Americans who participated in an elementary and/or high school music program? Many adults would like an opportunity to learn music in a group
setting similar to that offered in schools, but the last entry point in most cases was elementary school. The Saline New Horizons Music programs provide a similar path to music-making for adults. What makes Saline New Horizons special is the opportunity for people to take part in music who have never played...or who haven’t played in many years. Why not come and experience the fun with the
Saline New Horizons Band?
